Opening to the New Year

There is something so voluminous about a new year unfolding. And yet it is still winter when so much is still sparse and tightly furled. This season and its strange newness reflects perfectly the seemingly dichotomous aspects of life in which we are always opening and closing.

Like breathing, these episodes of opening and closing can pass without our notice. And too, like breathing, the greatest benefit comes from being present and deliberate in what we are opening up to in our lives and what we are acknowledging is coming to an end.

These beginnings and endings are not just the large shiftings of life — a new job, new home, new relationship —but also the subtle adjustments. When we open to greater balance and ease in our life, we close to those things that destabilize us, that make our daily living hard.

At this slope of the new year, consider what you would like to invite more of into your life and what you would like to let go off. Make it a practice each day to acknowledge what you are making space for and what you no longer are going to feed. It is these subtle adjustments that enable us to create a life of joy and ease.
